Stairs of Hope: The Home That Opened the Door to Josue’s Independence

Josefa Arianda lives with her husband and their three children. For years, their home was a place filled with challenges rather than comfort. Every time it rained, water would seep into the rooms, creating an unhealthy and difficult living environment.

But one of the biggest struggles was something many might overlook: the stairs. In poor condition and unsafe, they became a daily obstacle for Josue, Josefa’s son, who was diagnosed with autism three years ago. Instead of walking down the stairs, Josué had to crawl, limiting not only his mobility but also his sense of independence and joy.

Everything changed when Joseffa and her family were selected to receive a new home through Habitat’s housing program.

The transformation has been profound.

Today, Josue moves freely throughout his home. He can play without worry, sleep in a safe and comfortable space, and, perhaps most importantly, use the stairs on his own. The new structure has given him something invaluable: a sense of achievement and autonomy. His happiness is unmistakable. When visitors arrive, Josué eagerly welcomes them, proudly showing his room and sharing his excitement.

“Look at my new room,” he says, his voice reflecting a joy that once felt out of reach. For Josefa, the change goes beyond the physical home. She remembers the difficult days in their previous house moments filled with worry, isolation, and uncertainty.

“I cried alone, never imagining that one day I would receive this blessing,” she shares. Now, every corner of their home represents something new: safety, dignity, and hope. “I am grateful from the bottom of my heart,” Josefa says with a smile that speaks louder than words.

This home has not only transformed Josue’s life it has strengthened the entire family. Today, they face the future with renewed confidence, knowing that something as simple as a safe home can open the door to independence, opportunity, and a better life.
