Josefa Bixcul lives in a small community in rural Sololá, with her husband, children and their spouses.
As part of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala’s Healthy Home Kit program, families can build a sanitary latrine on their property. “We feel really happy with the new latrine, it is clean now and we have more privacy.” says Josefa. The old latrine was not in good conditions and really old.
Laura, one of Josefa’s daughter expresses: “We had a good time with the volunteers. They worked really hard and they shared with us, and chatted a lot,” she continues, “thank you for your support. We feel happy now and we wish you all a Merry Christmas!”

María lives with her husband Pedro and her in-laws in a small community in Sololá, Guatemala. While María’s husband works in agriculture, she weaves and takes care of the home.
As part of Habitat Guatemala’s Healthy Home Kit program, María and her family were able to build a new smokeless stove. “I used to cook on the floor, over an open fire. The smoke was really bad and made me sick. With my new stove I feel much happier, it is easier to cook, and saves a lot of wood too, so I do not have to buy so much,” says María about her new smokeless stove.
As a message to the volunteer she says: “Thank you for your support, we are living better now. I invite you to keep on working with more communities in need.”

Aquilina lives with her husband, her son, and his family in different houses on the same piece of land in Sololá, Guatemala. Aquilina’s husband works in agriculture, while Aquilina stays at home and weaves traditional clothes to sell.
By partnering with Habitat Guatemala, Aquilina’s family was able to build a new smokeless stove. Before, she used to cook over an open fire on the floor, and often got sick because of the smoke.
To the volunteers she says: “Maltiox! Thank you very much for your help and support, now I can cook easier and faster without smoke in my eyes. I feel happy.”

Manuela lives with her husband, their three children, Juana (7), Amanda (5) and Tomás (3), and her in-laws. While her husband works in the fields, she takes care of the house and family.
As part of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala’s Healthy Home Kit program, Manuela and her family were able to receive a new smokeless stove, a sanitary latrine, and a water filter.
“We used to cook on an old stove that used a lot of wood. The smoke made me sick and hurt my eyes, but with the new one, I feel better and save a lot of wood,” she continues, “we feel happy with the new stove, we have enough space to cook our tortillas, beans, oatmeal, and lots more.” With the water filter, the Zapeta family can drink water when ever they want without having to boil it first. And the latrine has helped them have more privacy.
About the volunteers, Manuela says: “We had a good time while they were here, they played with my children,” she continues, “thank you very much for coming and helping us, we wish you a Merry Christmas.”

Anastacia Calel, lives with her husband Oscar, and two children, Karina (5), Francisco (4) and one more baby on the way, in the department of Sololá, Guatemala.
Anastacia used to cook on her mother’s stove, that is old and in bad shape already, but now with her new smokeless stove, she says that it uses less wood, it heats really fast and has enough space to cook a lot of meals at the same time.
In addition to constructing a smokeless stove with the support of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala, Anastacia and her family also now have their own water filter and sanitary latrine. Anastacia says: “We used to drink water that had not been filtered, but now we get sick less often. And while before we shared a latrine with ten of our relatives, we now have our own to use. I am happy and they are happy too!”
“We had such a good time with the volunteers that came, they played with my children.” Shares Catarina. “Thank you for the opportunity you gave to my family, it is really important to us, may God bless you all.”

He grew up in a Habitat home, and after working and saving some money, he decided to build a house of his own with his brother. He wanted to start a life of his own and achieve his goals.
Marcelo explains who he feels with his new house: “I feel very happy and content with my own house and space. I am planning on adding a big garden, a false ceiling, and paint in the future.” He continues: “I like to listen to music in my new room.”
To the volunteers he says: “Thank you all very much for you hard work, we feel really happy you were here. May God bless you.”
