Volunteerism has been a key component of Habitat for Humanity since the organization’s inception in the late 1970’s, and it is an integral part of the work we do in Guatemala today. Our national volunteering program has really taken off recently with the number of national volunteers increasing significantly every year. We are proud to have an active role in the ever-growing volunteerism movement happening here in Guatemala.
The work of our 17 local affiliate offices is supported by Local Committees, who volunteer their time reaching out to their communities in order to promote Habitat’s housing solutions. Our affiliates also receive local teams of volunteers on builds in their areas. Around Guatemala City, we have numerous teams from local business, schools and churches lending a hand on worksites throughout the year. Also, once a month we organize an Open Build near the capital.
With regards to international volunteering, our Global Village program is as strong as ever. We host around 60 teams annually, who come from Habitat affiliates across the USA and Canada, university and church groups, and open teams headed by dedicated leaders. Many of our international volunteers are repeat visitors, coming down year after year to build alongside our Guatemalan partner families.
