One of Habitat for Humanity Guatemala’s newest collaborations is with Primeros Pasos, a health clinic based in Quetzaltenango. This projects takes an integrative approach to health by providing families with permanent health care solutions such as our Healthy Home Kits of smokeless stoves, sanitary latrines and water filters, plus also housing improvements like cement floors, stable walls and ceilings. This collaboration sprang from the enduring needs of the families, who participated in a yearlong Nutritional Program that provided 25 malnourished children with monthly nutritional care packages, medical check-ups and treatment, and biweekly health classes for their mothers. But even with all this health care support, these families still suffered often from illnesses such as parasites, stomach infections and respiratory problems.
Therefore, each of the homes was evaluated, and all participants are currently being provided with the various housing solutions based on their needs. The families’ participation in this project includes attending workshops on financial management, use and maintenance of new products, and health and nutrition. Additionally, the children formerly in the program will have three follow-up health check-ups with corresponding treatment.
This collaborative holistic health care project will provide long-term and sustainable health care solutions for the families while also demonstrating the positive effects housing solutions can have on the health and well-being of these children and their families.
